Plaxico Burress Fails Gangster 101

Picture the scene: huge 15,000 sqf nightclub in Manhattan with throngs of people dancing away to hip hop. The Latin Quarters - “ultra chic nightclub, with the style flare of Miami all packed into one exciting space.” Exciting indeed!

Enter a bling-laden NFL star with a billfold that will barely fit into his pocket and hidden gun for ’self protection’. Don’t forget the wing man!

Add a few drinks, a request that the gun-toting playa be moved to a VIP area by the uneasy management and….FUMBLE!!!! You have Plaxico Burress accidentally shooting himself in the leg and Antonio Pierce as his accomplice.

G cards revoked.

In one fell swoop, the Giants have rid themselves of the talented, yet troubled, star for the season and beyond. Oh by the way, carrying a concealed weapon in New York for which you have no permit was recently upgraded to a felony that gets you a mandatory sentence of 3.5 years in prison (thanks to PFT for the link). It could go as high as 5 years.

Unfortunately, Pierce, who hid the weapon ’somewhere in New Jersey’ is also facing potential criminal charges. He knew he was in trouble early, reportedly ‘berating Burress for bringing a loaded handgun into a club.’ Another case of wrong place at the wrong time.

Pierce is starting in Giants’ crucial game against the Redskins today. But will the linebacker be back after that? The Giants certainly have the depth to go deep without Burress, but will feel the absence of Pierce.

After reading about Ben Roethlisberger and other NFL stars’ decision to hire security guards to protect them from unseen threats in the wake of the Sean Taylor shooting (among other incidents), it is a touch ironic that Burress was the only threat in the house on Friday night.

Ironic and sad.
