Beckham Lands, Tour de France, and Baseball’s Midway with The Girls!

Today The Girls are coming to you live from the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, home of the LA Galaxy. The who, you ask? You know, the Galaxy, the soccer team that Victoria Beckham’s husband now plays for in the MLS. Yes, Vicky has descended upon our shores and brought along her super famous (famous - in EUROPE) husband with her. Will we ever be the same? Probably not, but we’re betting soccer will be.

Seems Vicky bolted out of London at a time when it is really heating up over there, and raining. Roger Federer takes the trophy, Venus takes the Plate, and Nadal takes a beating with rain delay after rain delay. It was a Wimbledon for the ages and suggests that tennis may be on the rebound. This whole Fedro-Nadal thing seems to have finally caught on with the masses. Time to run away!

And still in London, although you may think it’s in France, we have the start of the Tour de France. Doping or no doping, this is one captivating endurance race. Let’s face it, us regular Joes couldn’t make it up one foothill in the Pyrenees (see above photo), even if we had an IV with espresso running through our veins non-stop. Cycling deserves some kudos for the procedures in place to rid the sport of doping, but we will never be certain that there isn’t some magic potion being used, so best to just sit back and enjoy the color commentary and watch the countryside fly by. Oh, that and the occasional 40-man wreck. Our Fan-Tutor this week covers the course, and hopefully our Tour coverage will help set the stage for a three-week road race that is full of twists and turns and keeps you entertained. Now you don’t even have to find Versus.

Back on US soil we have an endurance race of another kind - NASCAR and its attempts to rid the sport of any degree of creative competition. We get it - STOCK cars. But the fun of NASCAR was the sport of getting one by the inspectors. Not anymore as major penalties are handed down without hesitation. Will it be good for the sport overall? One thing’s for sure, they could benefit from fewer and shorter races - which would give the teams more time to beat the system. And isn’t that what the hardcore fan wants? The girls long for the old days… These days, it’s all about corporate sponsors and it looks like EVERYONE is getting into the act…

So here we are at the halfway point in baseball. We’ve got the Home Run Derby - like watching flies mate, the All-Star game - like watching your brothers play baseball in the backyard with the victor getting the loser’s first born, and we have Bonds, Barry Bonds*. The Home Run Derby is too long, the All-Star game shouldn’t decide home field advantage in the World Series, and Bonds is putting up tremendous numbers, but haven’t we all gotten a bit carried away with the whole “sacred record” thing? Lots to debate as only The Girls can.

And finally, in this week’s IT HAS TO BE SAID, The Girls give you much to Wonder about. So grab your baseball cards, your Pop Rocks, and your Lanterne Rouge - it’s time to put the pedal to the sports metal with The Girls!
